NHS Ten Second Triage (TST) Slap Bands - P1 Red (Immediate Care)
The NHS Ten Second Triage (TST) Slap Bands have been developed to facilitate rapid casualty identification during mass casualty incidents, enabling efficient and effective prioritisation. This listing is for the P1 Red (Immediate Care) Ten Second Triage (TST) Slap Band, used to identify those requiring immediate, lifesaving treatment.
Following the findings from the Manchester Arena incident, it became clear that new approaches were needed for managing mass casualty situations. The Ten Second Triage (TST) tool was created as a response to these lessons, evolving into a tool that can be used by anyone responding to major incidents to provide initial care to casualties before the arrival of NHS clinical response teams.
The TST P1 Red Slap Band is specifically designed to assist those first on the scene, allowing them to quickly identify and focus on patients who need urgent, time-critical intervention. By rapidly assessing the condition of casualties, the use of these bands helps to reduce the time taken for injured individuals to receive the appropriate care.
NHS Ten Second Triage (TST) Slap Band Chart:
- Priority Level 1 - Immediate Care (Red Band): Requires lifesaving treatment immediately due to time-critical, life-threatening injuries.
- Priority Level 2 - Urgent Care (Yellow Band): Requires significant intervention as soon as possible. Injured or unwell, unable to walk.
- Priority Level 3 - Delayed Care (Green Band): Requires medical attention, but not urgently. Able to walk to treatment.
- Not Breathing (Silver Band): No breathing detected.
Efficient and Effective Triage
The Ten Second Triage (TST) tool is designed to be quick, simple, and effective in prioritising large numbers of casualties, allowing for rapid action in providing lifesaving interventions (LSI). These interventions include critical tasks such as controlling severe bleeding and opening airways—key measures that maximise patient survival in the early stages of injury.
The TST slap bands are used alongside the Ten Second Triage (TST) chart, ensuring an organised approach to managing casualties based on their condition.
Ideal for Non-Medical Professionals
The TST tool is designed to assist non-medical professionals who may be first on the scene during a major incident involving mass casualties. It enables a structured approach for prioritising care until clinical response teams arrive, ensuring that casualties receive the most appropriate treatment promptly.
This tool is indispensable for public services such as the Police and Fire Service and can also be used by other emergency response teams, including First Responders, Search & Rescue Teams, and the Coastguard.
