NHS Ten Second Triage (TST) A5 Aide-Mémoire Card – Double-Sided Algorithm Card for First Responders
The NHS Ten Second Triage (TST) A5 Aide-Mémoire Card is designed to provide essential guidance for first responders during major incidents involving mass casualties. Developed in response to the findings from the Manchester Arena incident, the Ten Second Triage (TST) tool aims to assist anyone responding to major incidents, enabling them to deliver rapid care to casualties before NHS clinical teams arrive.
This A5 double-sided card is a vital tool for those first on the scene, allowing responders to focus quickly on casualty conditions and prioritise treatment, thereby reducing the time taken for injured individuals to receive care. The TST card is made from high-quality, weatherproof PVC, making it durable, easy to use, and simple to write on during an emergency situation.
Please note: This listing is for the A5 Aide-Mémoire Card only.
Front of the Ten Second Triage (TST) Card
The front side of the TST card outlines the Ten Second Triage (TST) Algorithm, designed to facilitate immediate lifesaving interventions. It helps allocate the following statuses to casualties:
- P1 (Red Band): Immediate care – requires lifesaving treatment urgently due to time-critical, life-threatening injuries.
- P2 (Yellow Band): Urgent care – requires significant intervention as soon as possible; injured or unwell and unable to walk.
- P3 (Green Band): Delayed care – requires medical attention but not with any urgency; can walk to treatment.
- Not Breathing (Silver Band): Indicates that no breathing has been detected.
Reverse of the Ten Second Triage (TST) Card
The reverse side of the TST card features the METHANE Reporting Tool, providing structure and clarity during the initial stages of managing any major incident. METHANE is an acronym used to ensure clear communication and coordination between agencies:
- M – Major incident
- E – Exact location
- T – Type of incident
- H – Hazards
- A – Access
- N – Number of casualties
- E – Emergency services
Quick, Simple, and Effective Triage
The Ten Second Triage (TST) tool is designed for speed, simplicity, and efficiency, allowing responders to prioritise a large number of casualties effectively. The focus is on providing immediate lifesaving interventions (LSI), such as controlling severe bleeding and ensuring open airways—critical actions that are essential for maximising patient survival in the early stages of injury.
Use with TST Slap Bands: The TST card is best used alongside the Ten Second Triage (TST) Slap Bands, which help clearly identify casualty statuses:
- P1 Immediate Care Slap Band
- P2 Urgent Care Slap Band
- P3 Delayed Care Slap Band
- Not Breathing Slap Band
Ideal for Non-Medical Professionals
The Ten Second Triage (TST) tool is ideal for non-medical professionals who are often the first on the scene of a major incident involving mass casualties. It enables them to assess and prioritise casualties quickly and efficiently, ensuring the right care is provided as soon as possible. This tool is essential for public services, including the Police and Fire Service, as well as other emergency response teams such as First Responders, Search & Rescue Teams, and the Coastguard.
